Where is Copenhagen Located?
Copenhagen is Denmark’s capital city. It’s located on the west coast and face’s Sweden’s Malmö across the Øresund Strait.
Kinds of Accommodation to Book in Copenhagen
There are a variety of affordable accommodation options in Copenhagen. There’s Airbnb and VRBO for vacation home rentals or Hotels.com for discounted hotel stays. Hostelworld is an excellent website to research and compare hostel options and what I used when I visited Copenhagen.
What are Copenhagen’s Neighbourhoods?
Copenhagen has several different and distinct neighbourhoods as outlined on the map below. Copenhagen’s neighbourhoods include: Vanløse, Valby, Frederiksberg, Nørrebro, Østerbro, Vesterbro, Indre By (city centre), Islands Brygge, Christianshavn*, and Amager.
Where to Stay in Copenhagen: By Neighbourhood and Price Category
How do you typically choose where to book accommodation in a destination? For me it’s a mixture of walkability, interesting places nearby, and food options. Where to stay in Copenhagen is an exciting question to answer because there are places within the city for history buffs, foodies, the artistically-inclined, people looking for nightlife or those looking for a deep restful sleep – not to mention waterfront, parks, and cityscapes to delight your eyes. Without further ado, let’s dive into Copenhagen’s different neighbourhoods and where to stay within each of them according to different price categories.
Indre By (City Centre)
Most tourists pick Indre By as their resting place when they visit Copenhagen for the first time. It’s the city centre, right by the water, and full of history and gorgeous architecture.
It’s close to many “must-sees” like the historic amusement park in Tivoli Gardens, shopping on Strøget (the world’s longest pedestrian street), or the iconic colourful homes in Nyhavn. Indre By is also the place to be for events, concerts, and festivals.

- Boutique: 1 Hotel Copenhagen or 25hours Hotel Indre By (looks amazing!)
- Luxury: Nimb Hotel (located IN the Tivoli Gardens!)
Nørrebro
This artistic, bohemian neighbourhood is also home to Hans Christian Andersen’s final resting place. There are an abundance of independent cafés, bars, stores, and galleries in Nørrebro. Located north of Indre By, those in search of craft beer, street art, and beautiful parks (that are sometimes also cemeteries) will be in heaven.

Vesterbro
A popular residential area for families, Vesterbro used to be Copenhagen’s red light district! Today, it’s foodie central, there are art galleries, and a thriving nightlife. Vesterbro is a 5 minute walk or bike ride to the city centre, ideal if you want to have a restful night’s sleep and still be close to the city centre buzz in the daytime.

- Mid-Range: Hotel Mayfair
- Mid-Range: citizenM Copenhagen Radhuspladsen
- Mid-Range: NH Copenhagen Grand Joanne
- Boutique: Boutique Hotel Herman K
- Boutique: Hotel Ottilia
- Luxury: Villa Copenhagen
Østerbro
Østerbro is a bougie part of town, north of the city centre. Situated along the coast, a mixture of students, wealthier families, embassies, fancy boutiques, and a multitude of cafés share the neighbourhood. It’s also where the UN City, Fælledparken, the city’s largest park, and the rainbow homes of Olufsvej are located. Did I mention there’s a beach here? Svanemølle Beach is open year-round, with lifeguards keeping watch over the sandy shore in the summer.

Frederiksberg
Frederiksberg is at the absolute top of my list to stay in the next time I’m in Copenhagen. There are loads of oddities and unique features to this intriguing neighbourhood, many of which I share in the post about Planning Your Trip to Copenhagen. Plus, their hidden bookstores double as cafés and community event spaces. What could be more romantic than spending the day among book stacks, sipping a warm drink, and enjoying a book?

Where I Stayed in Copenhagen: Danhostel Copenhagen
During my stay in Copenhagen, I booked accommodation at Danhostel Copenhagen. Unless I’m travelling in a group (which rarely happens), I typically stay in hostels. As a solo traveller I love meeting new people and hostels provide the perfect environment to do so. They’re often the most affordable option and since I’d rather spend my money on food, experiences, and unique postcards they’re my go-to.
If I’m honest, the Danhostel Copenhagen wasn’t the best hostel I’ve ever booked. Perhaps I’m so used to pods and bunkbeds with curtains – both of which provide more privacy than these open-air beds. Perhaps it’s because there were a ton of high school groups staying there at the same time. (There were many families staying there too, which was kind-of neat to see.) Or perhaps it’s because I already wasn’t in a great mood (it wasn’t a stellar trip for reasons that had nothing to do with the city).
That being said, the hostel was clean, very centrally located, and had a café on site which was helpful for grabbing a quick bite.
As with many accommodation in the Danish capital city, Danhostel Copenhagen provided bikes for hire. You better believe I rented wheels and explored Copenhagen by bike!
