Without fail. It’s been 11 years since I moved

Without fail.

It’s been 11 years since I moved to Dublin. I’ve visited another 7 (I think) times, not including the family trip when I was a child and swore I’d never return.

It’s funny how a place can do that.

Each time I return to Ireland, my parents half-jokingly / half-seriously ask if I’m coming back home to Canada, my siblings say, “why don’t you move to Ireland already?” (they also say I’m not allowed to), my Irish friends say, “good to have you back, welcome home”.

I’ve thought about it each time. I thought about it this time.

For now I just need to figure out how to ship my campervan over the Atlantic to Ireland for next year…

If you’re not learning how to use points and mil

If you’re not learning how to use points and miles to fly (however often you’re in the skies), you are doing yourself a disservice.

Even if you fly once a year, learning how to pay yourself to travel is incredibly worth it - and it‘s so easy!

A few weeks ago I was talking to one of my closest friends who lives in Europe. She was telling me how she hates painting and has to paint her house. If we lived in the same city, or even a couple hours drive away, I’d be there to lend a hand. So why not fly there to help out?

Everyone’s first response is “money”. That makes sense. Paying hundreds or thousands of dollars on a whim is not the smartest financial decision!

However, this flight cost me only $150 in taxes and fees after using points.

My van costs $120 to fill up and that only gets me 450 km - 550 km on a tank.

The decision was easy.

So now I’m here, back in Europe for the week to spend time with a close friend, revisit a place I love, and go on a few adventures, all while working remotely.

Your travel might look different than mine, but your wallet will be just as chill.

Betty got a real good scrub the other day…when there was a heat warning on in September! Let me tell ya, working outside in nearly 40 degree heat is not my jam. Kudos to all who do it. That being said, I’m pretty happy for all the spray off the hose that cooled me down. It was also super satisfying to see the van sparkle when I finished! Im pretty sure the neighbours think I’m nuts with all the filming though. 😆

Since coming home a couple days ago, it’s been b

Since coming home a couple days ago, it’s been back to writing, bookkeeping, website updates, plus trip planning for the wild September ahead. I think I’ll be home for a total of 6 days the whole month!

In some ways it (oddly) feels like the summer has just begun, even though it was freakin chilly when I returned to KW. It must be the momentum of life these days. The first half of the summer felt slow, which is excellent for getting work done and sticking to healthy routines, but not quite that energetic “summer vibe”.

Then August kicked it up a notch with a van meet-up, a second trip to the Soo where a lot of van building was accomplished, and an absolutely fantastic time at Beach Road Weekend, along with road trip explorations throughout New England.

September is going to rapidly pick up speed, starting tomorrow. I’ve got fun and work trips throughout Ontario, another music festival / van road trip to a new state on eastern US coast, and a last-minute international trip that I am PSYCHED for, not only because I spent the equivalent of a tank of van gas on return flights, but also because it’s a place that lights up every fibre inside of me! I’ve always loved September, but I think this one might just be extra special.

In the meantime, I write to you from one of Waterloo Region’s best coffee shops, excited to finish work today (there’s still so much to catch up on!) so that I can catch another live music gig this evening.

Did you know that there’s a hike outside of Saul

Did you know that there’s a hike outside of Sault Ste Marie in northern Ontario’s Lake Superior Provincial Park where you can see 2 side-by-side lakes at the same time?

The first lake in the reel cover photo is Orphan Lake, and the name of the trail you take to get there. The second one you see beyond it is the mighty Lake Superior.

Things to note:

1️⃣ This is not a beginner hike. There are lots of hills, some of which are steep.

2️⃣ Make sure to wear proper footwear!

3️⃣ Pack a picnic to enjoy on the beach and give yourself enough time to sit back, relax, and enjoy the views…or even go for a dip!

4️⃣ The loop is approximately 6km and it’s best to visit between March and November, depending on weather.

SAVE FOR FUTURE 🇺🇸 TRIPS!!!

Moshup Beach on Martha’s Vineyard, also known as Aquinnah Public Beach, Gay Head Cliffs, and “the cliffs beach”, is a beautiful outdoors spot to add to your MV itinerary.

Beaches aren’t typically destinations I plan to visit, but Moshup Beach was the perfect place to enjoy a leisurely walk, take in the sea air, and feel the late summer breeze dancing on my skin.

A few things to know before you go:

1 Moshup Beach is public, unlike many of the island’s beaches. There are 2 options for parking near Moshup Trail: $30 USD per day or free for 1.5 hours only a short walk away from the paid lot. There are a few porta-potties near the beach entrance on the trail.

2 The walk to the beach is lined with poison ivy! Be very careful not to stray from the path.

3 The gorgeous multi-coloured cliffs are a National Landmark that are protected and owned by the local Indigenous group, the Wampanoag Tribe of Aquinnah, and the Martha’s Vineyard Land Bank Commission. Please be respectful by leaving no trace, staying off of the cliffs, and leaving the clay untouched to prevent erosion.

4 Naturalist (nude) sunbathing is optional farther down the beach.

5 You can swim, boogie and body board, fish from the shore, and relax or walk along the 0.8 km beach. Take your time and breathe in that fresh ocean air!

6 If you enjoy birdwatching, you’ll especially want to visit, as it’s a popular spot for migrating (sometimes rare) birds to rest. You can also see the biggest seagulls of your life along the beach.

2 days down, 1 to go for @beachroadweekend !

There’s been rain, there’s been sweat, and there’s been a LOT of amazing music and energy so far this weekend. It feels so amazing to be shoulder to shoulder with strangers, with the bass vibrating in my chest once again. Nothing beats live music.

The lineup here has been unreal so far: Caamp, Patti Smith, The Head and the Heart, Bon Iver, Gary Clark Jr, Mumford and Sons, Dispatch, Sammy Rae and The Friends, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Neighbor… The talent coming off these stages is through the roof and there’s even more to come today with Gregory Porter, Regina Spektor, Japanese Breakfast, and Leon Bridges.

Last night ended with Mumford and Sons, a band I last saw for one of the most epic concert experiences of my life when I lived in Dublin. They were as epic as I remembered and the crowd was on point too. What a night!!!

Bring on day 3 today!
