Looking for an awesome activity in November?

The Guelph Film Festival is just the ticket! Running from November 3rd until November 11th, this local celebration of documentary storytelling has a wide range of films to see.

Committed to providing a platform for a variety of voices, the GFF allots 50% of the schedule to Canadian films, 50% to female-identifying directors, and 50% to diverse directors. There are even tiny docs by kid filmmakers!

The Guelph Film Festival aims to engage its audience with thought-provoking films that are equally entertaining. In their words, “…that doesn’t mean it always needs to be intense. Joy can be a radical act”. With the state of the world right now, we could all use more joy and community building. There’s no better way to do so than by sharing stories.

The festival is free to people under 30 and the rest of ticket prices are Pay What You Want, thanks to community sponsors.

Call a friend, bring your family, or knock on a neighbour’s door that you don’t yet know too well. Invite them along and then why not head to one of Guelph’s many delicious eateries afterwards to share food and conversation together.

Having spent my last 2 trips to Ireland in this area, I can say with a smile that you’d best save this post for your future trip to Ireland!

Here are 7 things for you to do in County Clare, Ireland on a sunny day.

* Head to the beach! About 2 km long, the popular Lahinch Beach stretches around Liscannor Bay beckoning you to dip your toes or enjoy it from the land. There’s a lovely pathway to walk along, with many opportunities to stop and take in the views as you breathe the salty air. 
* Swimming, sailing, fishing, and kite surfing are all popular water activities to give a go here while on vacation.  
* Surf! Lahinch Beach is one of the most popular surf spots in Western Europe. It’s even fantastic for beginners. There are plenty of schools to book a lesson with or to rent a surfboard if you didn’t bring yours in your carry-on.  
* Eat Fish and Chips with a view. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in Lahinch, some of which have killer patios where you can savour your seafood and simultaneously enjoy oceanside views. 
* Get dessert at Spooney’s Ice Cream. You didn’t think we were skipping the most important part of the meal, did you? Proudly “cow-to-cone”, all of their flavours are homemade with donations from the cows just 5 minutes down the road. 
* Enjoy a trad session at Gus O’Connor’s in Doolin. While there are plenty of places on the west coast to catch a bonafide trad (traditional music) session at, Gus O’Connor’s is up there with the best of them. 
* Find love at The Matchmaker Bar in Lisdoonvarna. Sure, who doesn’t love a travel romance?

How do I afford to travel so often?

This is the number one question people ask me about my travels. To be honest, it was the question I used to ask the most too.

Over a decade ago I was in university, working my butt off to pay for school and secretly all I wanted to do was travel. It felt so unattainable with how expensive tuition, books, and gas were. Then I learned about travel hacking and my life changed.

Today I pay myself to travel by using the right tools to pay for my daily expenses.

Grocery bill rising? At least I’m earning points.
Gas prices rising? Still earning points.
Gifts to buy for another baby or wedding shower? Points!
Rent? Yup, I’m still earning points.

Over the years I’ve saved thousands on flights, including peak season and last minute flights. In fact, I just booked another trip to Europe for this year, at Christmas time, and the round-trip flight cost only $150.

Why does IG not show reels to people when my face

Why does IG not show reels to people when my face isn’t in them? It’s so annoying!

I was excited to put out the last reel with the colourful photos of Ireland. I wanted to represent more than the pubs, more than the green, and more than the few stereotypes it’s often associated with. It was enjoyable to play around with editing (I almost never edit in black and white, though I’m curious to dabble with it more), and I was genuinely interested to hear if there’s anywhere that you love to photograph, whether that’s for fun or for a more in-depth hobby.

Maybe it was the time I put the reel out at, maybe it was a poor quality video, maybe I tagged too many accounts or used too many hashtags. At least I used a trending audio…
 But if my face is in whatever I put out, even if it’s me typing on my computer (how boring is that?!), the “content” will undoubtedly be shown to thousands of viewers.

I get it. Humans and faces are engaging. I like seeing your face too…but sometimes I want to see what your eyes have seen. I want to be delighted by things that delight you enough to snap a photo or take a video of them. I want to be presented with a different perspective from my own when I browse content online.

There’s of course an argument for playing the game, and sure, that has to be done for just about everything in life. Fair enough. But sometimes (/ a lot of the time) I just don’t want to put my face in a reel or carousel post because it’s not relevant or (in my opinion) interesting. I want to share quirky things I notice. And windows and doorways. And tell stories of the people I meet.

Okay…rant done…for now. 😉 Oh, and here’s my face for the algorithm.

For some, it’s to explore. For others, it’s to reconnect. For many, it’s to create lifelong memories, to relax, to celebrate, and on and on.

Whatever your reason, the point is GO!

Get out there and see the world.
Interact with others.
Get out of your routine.
Get into the present.

Come home and share your experiences, the good and the bad, as well as the mediocre.

Save some for yourself too. Journal, take photos, record video, revisit them in your dreams.

Why travel? The world is too wonderful and complex and quirky not to experience as much of it as you can.
