Hello September!🍃

This time of year is the best!!! As a kid I LOVED making back to school shopping lists (which my parents promptly cut in half and then in half again😆), finding out who my teachers were, and seeing friends after the summer. After university, September continued to be an exciting transitional month because that’s when I moved abroad for the first time to Ireland, and then a few years later to Jeju-do, and a few years after that, to New Zealand!

While I’m not moving to any new countries this year😢, nor am I wading through the precarious situation in our traditional school system (Major Props🖐🏼 to all of my fellow teachers out there), I am continuing to explore and share local adventures, which I hope are informative and entertaining for you!

What does September mean for you? Do you live in a place where the seasons are changing? Are you heading back to school or work or somewhere around the world? What transitions are going on in your life?

Wow. Sitting on a patio, enjoying a cold cider, and getting some work done is a tiny pleasure I haven’t enjoyed in almost 2 years. How we take things for granted.

Speaking of, while many of us are fortunate to enjoy a roof over our head, a warm bed, food on the table, and social supports, many of our community do not.

This is where you can help!

There is so much need in our communities and the pandemic has only increased and further exposed the social gap.

You asked for more information on the @queensgreengarden Edible Sidewalk Garden, so here it is!🪴

📖 The wonderful folks at the Queen’s Green Community Garden let me know that member gardener, Glennis Yantzi, initiated the Edible Sidewalk Garden in 2017. The name came from a book called “Edible Garden” (author unknown).

💡 The inspiration came from years back when her front yard was transformed into a community veggie garden for neighbours to enjoy. Her sister pushed her to consider making accessibility a focus so that all members of the community, regardless of status, could take what they need. Glennis also shared legumes with the @foodbankwatreg .

🌺 As a member of the #queensgreencommunitygarden , Glennis wanted to continue spreading community cheer and proposed swapping the perennials along the sidewalk into food. Her fellow gardeners loved the idea and everyone pitched in to make it happen.

💚 In fact, even today every member of the Queen’s Garden contributes their time and energy growing and caring for the veggies and herbs by dividing up the tasks. Not only is the food available for anyone walking by, it is grown with a whole lot of love. Talk about a fresh serving of good vibes travelling from the earth into people’s bellies!

Has anyone else hopped on the garden train over the past year and a half?

I love gardens. I grew up cleaning the lettuce and checking for earwigs in my Baba’s garden. That task was usually followed by water fights with my cousins and her and my uncle and then eating fistfuls of raspberries and peas from her garden. It’s such a wholesome and magical place for a kid to be. 🐞 Now that I’m an adult, I appreciate fresh ingredients and the satisfaction of delayed gratification. 🤓

This is my first year growing anything. Knowing that I won’t be jetsetting again this summer makes having the time and attention for a garden more possible. I’m going easy to begin - a bit of cilantro, dill, basil, thyme, chives, garlic, and a big pot of mint!😋

And how does this relate to ✈️ you might ask? You can bet I’ll be attempting to make dishes from around the 🌏 with all of these delicious goodies!!!

PS I’ll take all the tips I can get. I’m pretty green in this area, and I don’t mean my thumb. 🌱

HOW it’s GOING + HOW things STARTED + an OOPS!

HOW it’s GOING + HOW things STARTED + an OOPS!

Recently I got my first #pfizervacine from the amazing nurses and volunteers with Waterloo Region, which warranted celebrating with one of my favourite treats, @fourallicecream . For the record, I didn’t faint this time (I was close the last time. See photo two after getting my second dose of Japanese encephalitis for our RTW in 2017), and I tried the new Strawberry Mimosa Sorbet and the Birthday Cake ice cream. Both flavours were deeeelish.

Considering I spontaneously burst into tears watching Spider-Man the other day because the characters were on a plane and then in Italy, it’s safe to say I’m pretty damn excited to get my first jab. I love exploring hyper-locally and throughout Canada, and will always do so. But I also really miss the world. Like a LOT. I miss flying, being a foreigner, getting lost, slowing down, bumbling through other languages, making friends with people I will probably never see again, waking up in new places that smell and look different from home, and learning how little I know and how much more I want to absorb every detail around me.

Soon enough. Jab two, I’m ready for you.

Final thought: Who digs the tan (burn...) line?
