Writing and wordplay have always been joyful and t Writing and wordplay have always been joyful and therapeutic activities for me. The process is quite literally a game of which turn of phrase fits best or how to layer multiple meanings. Writing connects the dots of people, place, and time and sometimes the more winding and convoluted the route, the more enjoyment there is in the process. Simplicity has its place too, as does the need to release energy from mind to hand to paper or key.

One of my favourite places to write is in coffee shops and cafés, the mom and pop ones with the friendly baristas and the quirky details. That they’ve become my office at home and on the road is beyond cool! They’re the perfect spot to meet friendly locals and travellers, to immerse oneself in culture and cuisine, and to feel the buzz of other humans coming and going, humming and tapping, laughing and sipping, studying and people watching. Contented smile. Easy exhale. Energetic inhale. Tappity-tap.

Thank you to @junelorraineroberts @a.van.degroot and @shelaghsanti for the tea time, the café buzz, and the tappity-tap this week. ❤️🥰 Your support of the blog means a whole heckuva lot!!!

The Toddfather🥃 @standingroomguelph doesn’t The Toddfather🥃

@standingroomguelph doesn’t just serve cocktails, they perform them. It may be Canada’s Smallest Bar, but everything else is larger than life.

After reserving your spot through @opentable , prepare for a full-sensory experience the moment you glide through the red velvet curtains. The sound system is impeccable, the mood perfect, and the drinks are on a whole other level.

If you don’t know where to start, order the signature, the Toddfather, a twist on the godfather in honour of the co-owner’s father. Or leave it up to the bartender if you can handle the suspense.

📍 60 Ontario Street, Guelph, Ontario
🕰️ Monday to Saturday, 4pm to midnight

*SAVE & SHARE: CANADA’S SMALLEST BAR* What’s *SAVE & SHARE: CANADA’S SMALLEST BAR*

What’s 144 square feet, has a world record 4-square foot dance floor, and serves killer cocktails with a side of prohibition-era vibes? Canada’s Smallest Bar: @standingroomguelph !

Trust me when I say that you’re going to want to reserve a seat at this brand new speakeasy. Despite being open for only 2 weeks, some patrons have already become regulars at the popular cocktail lounge.

Located in the historic Ward neighbourhood in Guelph, the area is no stranger to prohibition-era goings-on. Al Capone, the notorious American gangster, was said to walk these streets and disappear through Guelph’s underground tunnels.

Hospitality and story is at the heart of the speakeasy. Every detail has been meticulously thought out by Doug Todd, co-owner of Standing Room Only, and his designer friend @imellyg of Toronto’s Mad Design Company. From the unique top hat light fixtures and bottle toppers, a nod to Guelph’s famous Biltmore Hat Company, to the fabulous whiskey-barrel bathroom sink, to black and white classics playing on the screen or the 10-foot tall ladies behind the bar, to the multilingual floor greeting, or to every bar stool, the sliding ladder, and the sleek S-shaped bar that Doug built himself, this is truly a special destination to visit.

Here’s what you need to know to plan your visit:

📍 Location: 60 Ontario St., Guelph
🕰️ Hours: Wednesday to Saturday from 4pm to midnight
📝 Menu: One-of-a-kind cocktails are their speciality, however there are mocktails for the alcohol-free crowd, beer, cider, and wine as well. And just you wait for the amazing menu experience they have yet to reveal!!!
🍸 Signature Drink: The “Toddfather”, named after Doug’s father

I, like you I’m sure, travel for all sorts of re I, like you I’m sure, travel for all sorts of reasons. Unknowingly, 2022 became the year of Travelling to Reconnect.

While I have greatly missed bumbling my way through a different language, or surprising my senses with unfamiliar aromas and sounds, what I have craved most these past few years was connecting with other people…and so it seems that is what I sought out in the many places I was fortunate to visit in 2022.

The widest grins and bursting chest feeling I’ve missed so much returned last year from being able to bear hug friends, family, and strangers alike (who’re really just future friends). It came from sharing warm campfire nights, dancing our hearts out at outdoor concerts, enjoying leisurely winter walks and shade-chasing afternoon chats, finally attending long-awaited conferences, chatting with plane seatmates, soaking up family time, relishing courtside reunions, integrating into the van community, returning to my second home, and so many more special moments.

2022 was a “bucket filler”, as they say in elementary schools these days. I am so very grateful for it and for all of you in my life. 🥰

Looking back on your year, I’m curious if you found a theme for yourself.

Community. It’s a word whose meaning has morphed Community. It’s a word whose meaning has morphed quite a bit with the proliferation of social media in our lives, though its importance has only been magnified with the mountainous changes that occurred around the world over the last 3 years.

Whether it was luck or fate or synchronicity, the stars aligned quite a bit for me this year to become a part of a new, very welcoming and warm community. From the friendly people I met through this platform who helped me research and vet vans (@chrisandnicole__ and @katiesteckly ), to all of the diverse and adventurous people I met at the @vanlifecommunitycanada meet up only 4 days after I got the keys and at @elliotttreefarm (@yourinnervitality @suzanne.the.camper.van @brittmack Kage & Ellie, @puengken @scottandsaratuck @ryan_bell @1derlust_mama @veevanvoom @vanbeewild @mortens_on_the_move @lalylun1 @van_na_white_ ), to the neighbourhood skoolie who answered a random knock on their door (@travelprofessional1 ), to the years-long Instagram chats that became timely in-person coffee hangouts (@thebrownvanlife ) and serendipitous cross-country fridge exchanges (@mariepier.bastien ), to summer weekends spent exploring @harvesthosts locations and festivals around Canada (@a.van.degroot @pam.silverstein @celiaaufit @ericsveganvan @carolepitre @snapshotsweapons @thevanlifechronicles ), to international parking lot neighbours (@neuland.stories ), surprising reveals (@hrp2hrt ), co-builders (@katieanddaninavan ) and Irish-Canadian connections (@stephsitts), the list goes on and on.

This has been the best part of #vanlife so far.

Vanlifers are tight knit, come from a variety of life experiences, and are quick to support one another. It’s amazing to witness these elements of the human experience unfold and even more wonderful to partake in moments of kinship.

The vanlife neighbourhood may be boundary-less, but it feels close and present. I can’t wait to meet more courageous and vivacious souls along this winding journey and to welcome others into the fold.

First things first, @katieanddaninavan are absolut First things first, @katieanddaninavan are absolute rockstar humans. From their ideas and construction knowledge thanks to their own van build, to their positivity and patience, to their hands-on help (wayyyy more than is shown in this reel), I am lucky to count them as friends and grateful for their help.

Second, HOLY MOLY I HAVE A COZY BENCH AND SOON-TO-BE STORAGE AREA AND MY FRIDGE IS INSTALLED!!!!!! This is a project I’ve had in mind since buying the van in April…and 8 months later it’s nearly done! The priming and painting will have to wait for warmer weather, and I haven’t figured out anything to do with the cushions or decor yet, but I’m already crossing this one off the list. YEAH, BABY!🚐👷🏻‍♀️✅

New skills learned today:

• How to use an orbital sander
• How to make pilot holes without breaking the bit
• How to frame a fridge
• How to change the angle on a miter saw
• How to use the rip fence on a table saw

BOOM! Do I ever feel like a badass today - not to mention how much fun it was hanging out and working together with those two!

What a day. And to think I wanted to stay warm at home. I would have missed out on so much awesome energy. Good thing I didn’t give in and hibernate!
